Reading is an essential skill children must know in order to become successful at school AND throughout their life. Why? First, reading is needed to learn most other educational topics. The better a child can read, the easier it will be for them to understand what is written in textbooks or on a PowerPoint presentation! Reading also improves grammar, spelling, and writing skills. All this leads to future academic success!
Second, reading skills are necessary for everyday living as an adult. On the most basic level, you need to be able to read street signs while driving or to fill out a job application! Reading is therefore one of the critical foundations for success in life! Although it is best to learn how to read at a young age, it is never too late to learn!
Sad Statistics
According to the National Center for Education Statistics 31% of 4th graders in 2015 were below the basic reading level; 28% of 12th graders were below the basic reading level. Many of these students will end up dropping out of school before completing high school and may end up having a hard time finding a decent job!
